EXPRESSIVE THERAPY
At Cre8tive Recovery, we believe the answer to the healing is in the doing, and the more you do over time, the more straightforward the answer to your healing becomes. Expressive Therapy uses art, dance, drama, mindfulness, music, and play to heal from emotional pain. It focuses on going through the process of creating, for healing to take place. A process so simple, a must-do for total mind and body transformation.
Terms
Trauma
A deeply distressing or disturbing emotional or physical experience. Each person experiences and responds to it, based on their perceived notion of the environment. Therefore, no one person can define another person's trauma or how they should respond or deal with it.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.)
A debilitating anxiety disorder that occurs after witnessing or being a victim of a traumatic event. Trauma can be real or perceived trauma that happened to you or others. This Disorder typically occurs after natural disasters, death, combat, assault, medical, physical, or sexual abuse.
Multigenerational/Transgenerational/Intergenerational Trauma
A psychological term is referring to the notion that trauma can transfer through generations. It is the belief that after the first generation experiences trauma, they can transfer this on to the next generation. This trauma is a complex form of P.T.S.D. or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (P.T.S.S.)
A theory created by Dr. Joy DeGruy that claims African Americans carry the residual leftover from chattel slavery based on the philosophy that "Africans Americans were inferior to whites." P.T.S.S. has, in turn, caused maladaptive behaviors that were needed to survive and have impacted the Black Community. This knowledge can help African Americans begin to heal from their past and rebuild their communities.
Spirituality
Being concerned with the human spirit or soul, as opposed to material things. Believing in something bigger than oneself.
Ritual
A religious ceremony is consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order.
